Lot Description
1909-S 50C MS67 PCGS. Inverted Mintmark. FS-50-1909S-501. In Volume 17, issue 4, of the Journal of the Barber Coin Collectors' Society, Frank J. Colletti contributed "Barber Half Mintmark Varieties," a discussion of inverted S mintmarks. The Friend specimen clearly matches the characteristics of the 1909-Inverted S half dollar. The mintmark is narrower at the bottom, and the bottom curve is thinner. Study of inverted mintmarks is still in its infancy, although more numismatists are taking notice. The concept of an inverted S may seem strange to some, much as the idea of an inverted O would also seen strange. Alternatively, the concept of inverted C and D mintmarks would be readily grasped. The Dale Friend Superb Gem is clearly finer than the Pryor coin, and much the same as the Eliasberg and Price examples. We sold an NGC graded MS68 example in our January 2005 Hugon sale, although we doubt that the Hugon coin was that much finer than the present example. Both sides are fully brilliant and lustrous with frosty silver surfaces that are accented by light champagne and gold toning. Only a couple tiny marks keep it from an even higher grade. The strike is bold with only slight weakness at the arrow feathers. Population: 7 in 67, 0 finer (10/08). Ex: U.S. Coins, Inc. From The Dale Friend #2 All-Time PCGS Registry Set of Barber Half Dollars.
