Lot Description
1917-D 50C Reverse MS65 PCGS. Although the 1917-D Mintmark on Reverse half dollar has a higher mintage (about 2.5 times) than its Obverse Mintmark counterpart, it is considerably scarcer in Extremely Fine and higher grades. In Mint State, the ratio of Obverse Mintmark examples to Reverse Mintmark specimens is nearly 2 to 1. In Gem, the Reverse Mintmark variant becomes an important condition rarity. PCGS reports only 35 specimens at that lofty level with just five pieces finer (9/11). The surfaces of the present coin have the typically encountered matte-like texture with attractive mint frost over both sides. This piece is mostly brilliant save for a light ring of russet toning around the obverse margin. The strike is razor-sharp and there are no noteworthy handling marks. An excellent piece for a series specialist.
