Lot Description
1917-S 50C Obverse MS66 PCGS. We have never handled a 1917-S Obverse Walker as fine as this premium quality Gem. While not the most carefully produced issue in this series, the '17-S Obverse is not the strike rarity that it was once marketed as. Indeed, the present example displays bold overall definition that includes a nearly complete portrait of Liberty on the obverse and emerging detail on the eagle's breast feathers in the center of the reverse. The mint luster is full with a billowy texture, and the virtually blemish-free surfaces are accented with mottled champagne-tan shades. A coin with simply extraordinary eye appeal. PCGS reports just two 1917-S Obverse Walking Liberty Half Dollars in MS66, whereas NGC has yet to certify a single coin above the MS65 grade level. Remarkably, there is also an MS67 coin at PCGS (4/02). Once heralded as the "King of the Walkers," the 1917-S Obverse is still rightly considered to be one the keys to this eminently collectible series in the higher circulated and Mint State grades. In fact, only the 1919-S is more challenging to locate at the finer levels of Mint State preservation. This issue's original mintage is a modest total of 952,000 coins. From the Ally Collection.
