Lot Description
1919-D 50C MS65 PCGS. In Gem condition, the 1919-D and '21-S are the two foremost keys in the widely collected Walking Liberty Half series, and a strong case could be made for placing this issue at the top of the list. Aside from the fact that the supply of '19-D Walkers at the Mint State level is extremely limited, the single greatest deterrent in locating a Choice or better example is the tell-tale weakness of strike, especially on the hand and head area of the obverse, that seems common to virtually all 1919-D Half Dollars. On this extraordinary example, Liberty's right (facing) hand is essentially complete and the head detail, while a trifle mushy, is better defined than virtually all Uncirculated pieces seen by this cataloger. The luster of this coin parallels the remarkable strike, being intense throughout with the barest trace of golden peripheral color. Magnification is required to locate a few unobtrusive blemishes on the central devices. A serious collector of Walking Liberty Half Dollars might search for years and not find a finer 1919-D than the amazing Gem offered here. Population: 9 in 65, 1 finer (10/04). From The Gene Holland Collection of United States Coins, Part Two.
