Lot Description
1919-S 50C MS64 NGC. Although the 1921-S is known as the "King of the Walkers" and the 1919-D is a formidable rarity in high grades, the 1919-S is unquestionably one of the most desirable coins in the series in any grade. Indeed, if one goes by the NGC and PCGS population figures for Mint State coins as of (8/06), the '19-S, with 284 pieces certified in MS60 or higher, is actually rarer in such high grades than any other coin in the series except the 1921-S, with 218. The more prominent 1919-D has had 306 specimens receive grades of MS60 or higher. Certainly, these figures include resubmissions and are by no means exact measures of rarity, but they do act as food for thought. This is a bright, lustrous coin with bursts of brilliance alternating with pale gold-green highlights. Although not fully struck, this is normal for the date, and reasonable detail remains on the skirt lines and head. Surfaces are mostly smooth, with an abrasion in the right obverse field seemingly the only thing separating this piece from Gem status. An attractive piece, a key date, and a coin destined for a home in one of the finest collections of Walkers. From The Big Tex Registry Set of Walking Liberty Halves.
