Lot Description
1919-S 50C MS67 NGC. This issue is not nearly as rare as the '19-D Half Dollar in Gem condition, but Superb Gem examples are all but non-existent. In fact, this is the single finest 1919-S Half Dollar to be certified by either PCGS or NGC. Time was that this issue was actually considered rarer than the Denver Mint coin in Mint State grades. Witness the 1956 Guide Book, where the '19-D cataloged for $250 in Uncirculated, and the '19-S for $450. Those were the days. This satiny Gem has brilliant ivory surfaces with hints of natural champagne toning. Wisps of iridescence are visible along the borders. The fields are nearly prooflike in appearance. Although not fully struck, this example is nearly so. This example also has a sharply defined and well-formed mintmark, unlike so many where the small letter S is barely recognizable. The importance of this opportunity can not be overemphasized. Prior to this appearance, we have only handled one example finer than the MS65 grade. In July 2002, we sold an MS66 grade coin. Population: 1 in 67, 0 finer (10/05).
