Lot Description
1920-S 50C MS65 NGC. This is a relatively high mintage date, with some 4,624,000 pieces struck, yet it is elusive in Gem quality. Due to a substantially higher mintage, the actual rarity of this issue in the better grades of Uncirculated is often overlooked. Even though a small hoard of pieces were found in 1977, these coins did not materially affect the availability of Gem specimens. The surfaces of this example exude radiant luster and variegated powder-blue and golden-tan patina. Most of the design elements are well struck, though softness is noted on the left legs of Liberty and the eagle, Liberty's left hand area, and on the eagle's breast. A few minor marks on Liberty's midsection and left leg are not worthy of mention. A small unobtrusive mark is also noted on the eagle's head.
