Lot Description
1921-D 50C MS64 PCGS. CAC. The scarcity of the 1921-PDS Walking Liberty halves can be laid directly at the feet of the Pittman Act of 1918, which idiotically required the Mint, in short, to melt 270 million silver dollars to sell silver bullion to India -- and then to recoin the silver dollars with newly purchased domestic silver. The silver dollar coinage recommenced in 1921 but lasted for years, and the Philadelphia Mint scarcely had time to produce half dollar (or other minor coinage) dies for the branch mints. The present near-Gem 1921-D boasts thick mint luster, but the strike is noticeably soft in the centers. Light lilac patina prevails, accenting scattered darker accents. Population: 91 in 64, 34 finer (11/11).
