Lot Description
1923-S 50C MS65 PCGS. Although the 1923-S half dollar had a mintage exceeding 2.1 million coins, its status as the only half dollar struck from 1922 through 1926 meant that demand for it was keen; most examples circulated. Today it is considerably rarer in Gem Mint State than collectors might believe. This example is one of only 41 such certified at PCGS, and only eight are finer (11/12). The frosted surfaces show little trace of color, but strike weakness through the center is almost a given on this issue, despite the rudimentary evidence of a partially split thumb. The few minor, scattered marks are in accord with the grade. This attractive example would be difficult to upgrade, given the paucity of finer survivors.
