Lot Description
1923-S 50C MS65 NGC. There were no Walkers issued in 1922, 1924, 1925, or 1926. At the time, the mint was busying themselves with commemorative coins as well as silver dollars and gold issues. It would not be until 1934 that the Philadelphia mint would produce another example of this design. For the specialist, the 1923-S is a complicated issue. Lower grade circulated examples are plentiful, higher grade pieces (XF and AU) are elusive, and Mint State examples are scarce. Like all of the early dates, Gem quality coins are important rarities. This is a lovely example that is nicely defined, certainly above average, with only minor blemishes. The ivory surfaces have frosty luster with mottled golden toning.
