Lot Description
1927-S 50C MS66 S NGC. Only 2.3 million pieces were struck of the 1927-S half, making it one of the premier strike and condition rarities in the Walking Liberty series. Apparently most of the mintage entered the channels of commerce, as this issue is only really common in grades below the XF level. This is the second time we have handled this coin, the only MS66 example of the date we have ever offered, and this one comes with the coveted NGC S designation. Very sharply struck on all the main devices--there may be a better struck example somewhere but we haven't seen it. This issue is also well known for its wholesome luster, but again, this coin shows the thickest mint frost imaginable, which is aided even more by die polish in the fields. As one might infer from the grade, this piece is also uncommonly clean. Population: 1 in 66 S, 0 finer (6/05). From our July 2003 Baltimore Signature Sale. From The Robert Moreno Collection.
