Lot Description
1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves AU55 PCGS. B-6, BB-25, R.3. Bowers-Borckardt Die State III, dies clashed and lapped, a crack through star 10 on the obverse. These obverse features, combined with the Three Leaves reverse, confirm the variety. The strike is exceptional, as can be seen on Liberty's hair detail and on the eagle's feathers, surpassing the strike on two recent AU55 PCGS coins, both of the more common B-5, BB-27 variety, found in the Permanent Auction Archives; one, in the same die state as this coin, brought $25,300, and the other, in a later die state, brought an amazing $71,875. Both sides have light gray toning over surfaces that retain considerable luster, even after the passage of more than two centuries. The reverse shows a number of adjustment marks all around the rims as well as across the eagle; these items do not detract from the eye appeal, but add character instead. PCGS has certified 63 finer pieces across all Three Leaves varieties (1/10).
