Lot Description
1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves AU50 NGC. B-6, BB-25, R.3. Bowers-Borckardt Die State III, with four leaves in the cluster below the first S in STATES. An earlier die state of this variety exists with only three leaves showing below the S, causing Bolender to believe it was a different variety, which he called B-18 in 1952 and B-21 later. The missing leaf was probably due to foreign matter clogging the die. Most often seen in grades below VF, BB-25 becomes rare at the AU level. The present coin is an attractive AU specimen, showing the usual softness on the centers and some peripheral elements, due to lapping. The pleasing surfaces are iridescently toned in shades of gray, green, claret, and violet. Traces of mint luster shine through the toning. A few minor rim bruises are noted at 7 o'clock on the obverse and some adjustment marks are seen on the central reverse. Census for BB-25: 1 in 50, 2 finer (4/12).
