Lot Description
1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Two Leaves AU55 PCGS. B-4, BB-14, R.3. Ex: Cardinal Collection. A large mintage of 160,295 Flowing Hair dollars was achieved in 1795, with an additional mintage of Draped Bust dollars later in the year. There are 17 die varieties known for the Flowing Hair dollars, and another two for the Draped Bust type. The present coin is an example of the BB-14 variety, characterized by the position of star 15 completely below the bust, and hence "hidden" from Liberty's view. The 1795 dollars are popular as the second year of a two-year type, with 1794 dollars being rare and expensive. The present coin is a Choice AU specimen with attractive gold and champagne toning over the lustrous surfaces. The design elements are sharply defined, with just a touch of softness on the left obverse stars and the eagle's breast. Admirable detail remains on Liberty's hair and the eagle's wings. Population for all Two Leaves 1795 dollars: 27 in 55, 26 finer (10/12). Ex: Cardinal Collection (ANR, 6/2005), lot 8; Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2010), lot 4300. From The Presidential Collection.
