Lot Description
1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Silver Plug VF25 PCGS. B-7, BB-18, R.3. Bowers-Borckardt Die State I. According to Mint records, 160,295 Flowing Hair dollars were struck in 1795, before the design was changed to the Draped Bust motif later in the year. Seventeen die varieties are known for the Flowing Hair type, with the present coin representing the BB-18 variety. The BB-18 is identified by the position of the lowest curl barely touching star 1 and nearly completing a loop, and the 14 berries in the reverse wreath. This coin features the interesting silver plug at the center, a device the Mint used in the early days to add the proper amount of silver to an underweight planchet. The outlines of the plug can be seen on both sides of this coin, as the plug has taken on a pale greenish-gold patina that contrasts with the silver and dove-gray hues elsewhere. Specimens with the silver plug are rare and avidly sought-after by series enthusiasts. The present coin is evenly worn, with pleasing surfaces showing only minor abrasions. Population for silver plug: 5 in 25, 23 finer (4/12).
