Lot Description
1796 $1 Small Date, Large Letters, B-4, BB-61, R.3, AU50 PCGS. Bowers-Borckardt Die State I. The 1796 Draped Bust dollar claims a mintage of 72,920 pieces, with six different die varieties known for the date. This coin represents the BB-61 variety, with a "raised dot" die flaw above the 1 in the date and large letters in the reverse legend. The obverse die was used again to strike the BB-62 variety of the date, but this was the only use of the reverse die. The present coin is an attractive AU50 example, with well-detailed design elements that show just a trace of actual wear. The pleasing surfaces are remarkably free of large or distracting abrasions and retain some traces of original mint luster, under shades of lavender-gray and golden-brown toning. Population: 8 in 50, 13 finer (4/14).
