Lot Description
1796 $1 Small Date, Large Letters AU55 NGC. B-4, BB-61, R.3. Bowers-Borckardt Die State I. According to the 2014 Guide Book, 79,920 Draped Bust dollars were struck in 1796. Six different die varieties are known for the date. This coin represents the BB-61 variety, with small numerals in the date and one berry located under the first T in STATES on the reverse. The BB-61 is the most available variety of 1796, but most examples seen grade no better than XF. Choice AU specimens, like the present coin, are quite rare. This coin probably fits in at the low end of the Condition Census for the variety, or just barely outside it. The sharply detailed design elements of this charming AU55 example show just a touch of wear and the pleasing lavender-gray surfaces retain a few traces of original mint luster. Only minor abrasions are evident and some faint planchet adjustment marks can be seen on the upper reverse. This coin should find a home in a fine collection or type set.
