Lot Description
1796 $1 Large Date, Small Letters AU50 PCGS. Ex: Durango Collection. B-5, BB-65, R.4. The silver dollars of 1796 are known in six different varieties. The present coin is a representative of the B-5, BB-65 variety, characterized by the large date on the obverse and the small lettering on the reverse. The 6 in the date has been double punched, and the reverse die has a noticeable lump above I in AMERICA. The R in LIBERTY has a broken right foot. Since the other varieties of 1796 dated dollars show this letter in its complete state, or only partly broken, the B-5, BB-65 obverse die must have been the last die produced for this date. Both obverse and reverse dies were only used on this variety. While the variety is available in lower grades, Q. David Bowers notes "BB-65 becomes a rarity in AU or finer." The present coin is an attractive example of this early dollar. Wear shows only on the high points of Liberty's tresses and the eagle's leg. Much original luster remains on the devices, with original silver flash blending with mottled gray and lilac toning. The issue's rarity in higher grades makes improving on the present offering a difficult task. Population: 6 in 50, 15 finer (11/08). See: Video Lot Description
