Lot Description
1796 $1 Large Date, Small Letters VF35 PCGS. B-5, BB-65, R.2. Die State III. The slightly larger numerals are in the style of the 1797 dollars, although it is not immediately obvious. The most prominent diagnostic for the obverse is the bold repunching visible on the 6 of the date. Another quick pickup is the broken lower right tip of the R in LIBERTY. On the reverse the letters are small, of course, and a leaf tip ends under the A in STATES. The die lump at I in AMERICA has begun its travel toward the adjacent C, although here it is still a broad die line rather than a solid lump touching the C. The surfaces still offer some muted luster over attractive silver-gray surfaces. ST are somewhat weakly struck, as often seen on this die marriage.
