Lot Description
1797 $1 9x7 Stars, Large Letters XF45 PCGS. B-1, BB-73, R.3. The Draped Bust obverse was introduced in 1795 with a 15 stars obverse design. The same star count appeared on 1796 silver dollars and was increased to 16 stars for the 1797 silver dollars. The next appearance was early in 1798, with the star count reduced to 15 stars and finally to 13 stars. The star count might suggest that one of the states temporarily left the nation. What actually happened is that an unused coinage die was left over from 1795 with only the first three digits of the date. That die was then utilized in 1798, with the date completed to reflect the later year. In 1797 two different obverse dies were used. One had nine stars to the left and seven to the right, and the other had 10 stars to the left and six to the right. Each is considered a separate subtype of the Draped Bust, Small Eagle design. This Choice XF specimen is mostly light silver at the centers with splashes of heather and steel-blue toning. The surfaces are smooth and attractive. Population: 37 in 45, 44 finer (2/11).
