Lot Description
1797 $1 9x7 Stars, Large Letters AU58 NGC. B-1, BB-73, R.3. Although not the terminal state for these dies, this is a late die state with many of the final die cracks visible. Not visible on this example is the die crack through the second T of STATES, meaning this coin was struck before the 1798 Small Eagle dollar with the same reverse die. Terminal state coins of this 1797 variety were struck after the 1798 Small Eagle coins. This is a lovely example with mostly steel-blue toning, accented by lighter pewter-gray luster on both sides. All of the design elements are boldly detailed, except where they are obscured by a trace of wear. The strike is strong and nicely centered, with full and complete border dentils on each side. Neither side is affected by adjustment marks, and only a few small ticks and scratches are present. Outstanding quality for one of these early silver dollars. From The Royal Oak Collection.
