Lot Description
1797 $1 9x7 Stars, Small Letters VF30 NGC. B-2, BB-72, R.4. Die State I. Seven stars right; paired berries below left side of first S. Only one die state is recorded by Bowers, indicating that no die wear took place during the coinage of this variety. Both sides have pleasing light gray color with considerable opaque gold toning along the obverse border. Minor obverse abrasions and faint reverse hairlines are visible. This is a scarce and highly desirable example, due in part to the fame it has garnered over the years from collectors and dealers who claimed it to be a major rarity. In the past, estimates of the number of examples known have been as small as just 20 coins, but the true population is probably in the range of 150 to 200 coins. This example from the Luebke collection is finer than most. Although a few high-quality pieces are known, nearly all examples of this die variety grade Fine or VF. The lower average grade is due in part to the nature of the reverse design, which was shallowly cut in the die and further diminished by die lapping or refinishing. The devices wore quickly with even a modest amount of circulation. Ex: Bowers and Merena (9/2002), lot 348. From The William Luebke Collection.
