Lot Description
1798 $1 Small Eagle, 13 Stars XF45 PCGS. B-1, BB-82, R.3. Bowers-Borckardt Die State II. Although moderately toned in a somewhat mottled fashion, this coin appears to be original and problem-free. This obverse die was eventually paired with a Large Eagle reverse, creating the very rare 1798 B-32, BB-91. This is the second and final use of the reverse die. A glance at the reverse on this specimen shows the possible reason for this--this coin was struck from an intermediate state of the dies and displays an obvious die break. The crack that connects the denticles with the upper part of the second T in STATES is easily visible from the denticles to the top of the T. Even wear shows over each side with some reflectiveness noted over the obverse. Steel-gray toning is complimented with rose hues at certain angles. Population: 18 in 45, 18 finer (10/12). Ex: Denver Signature (Heritage, 8/2006), lot 5292. From The Presidential Collection.
