Lot Description
1798 $1 Small Eagle, 13 Stars AU53 PCGS. B-1, BB-82, R.3. Slightly more plentiful than the 15 Stars variety (B-2), this is undoubtedly one of the finest specimens known of this variety. The Condition Census in the Bowers and Borckardt reference lists the finest known examples as 64-50-50-45 (multiples), placing this piece well within the lower range of these coins. This is a very attractive representative of this scarce type. Much sharpness of details is evident on the recessed portions of the design; it is only on the most exposed areas that one notices a bit of softness and slight friction from circulation. Moderate gray-golden toning covers both sides, with steel-blue obverse peripheral color noted along with some underlying iridescence. Luster is surprisingly strong, for the grade. Abrasions are few, and all are trivial in size. An outstanding opportunity to acquire one of the higher-quality survivors of this important early type coin. Population: 2 in 53, 4 finer (7/06).
