Lot Description
1798 $1 Small Eagle, 15 Stars XF45 NGC. B-2, BB-81, R.3. Bowers-Borckardt Die State II. There are 33 die varieties of 1798 dollars, and among those, only two bear the Small Eagle reverse first introduced in 1795. B-2 is the sole 1798 variety with 15 obverse stars, which implies the obverse die was made prior to June 1796, when Tennessee became the 16th state. The die was presumably complete save for the date, which was entered in 1798 when the die was removed from storage and prepared for coinage. This attractive example has a pleasing quota of shimmering luster within design recesses, particularly the hair. The eagle's body and Liberty's cheek and shoulder show the expected moderate wear, but the cream-gray and pale autumn-brown surfaces are generally smooth except for a thin reverse mark near 10 o'clock.
