Lot Description
1798 $1 Small Eagle, 15 Stars XF40 NGC. B-2, BB-81, R.3. Bowers-Borckardt Die State II. The only 1798 dollar die with 15 stars on the obverse, clearly the undated obverse die was prepared before June 1796, when Tennessee was admitted to the Union. Leftover from that year, the unused die was completed in 1798 and pressed into service to coin this popular Guide Book variety. The 1798 Small Eagle dollar with 15 stars is slightly more elusive than its 13 star counterpart, and commands a significant premium. This impressive XF40 specimen exhibits light wear on the design elements, which show some incomplete detail due to lapping. The charcoal-gray surfaces are lightly abraded and problem-free.
