Lot Description
1798 $1 Small Eagle, 15 Stars XF45 NGC. B-2, BB-81, R.2. Die State II. Noticeable luster emerges from the stars, legends, wreath, hair, and plumage. Lightly toned in gentle lilac tints, this piece displays moderate wear on the cheek, shoulder, bust truncation, and on the eagle's breast. No abrasions distract the eye, and no adjustment marks are located. The only 15 stars variety of the year, Bowers theorizes that the die was prepared without a final date digit in 1795 or 1796, when 15 stars was the rule, but the die was not hardened or put into use until 1798. From The Thomas Wolfe Collection, Part One.
