Lot Description
1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, Close Date, B-27, BB-113, R.2, MS61 NGC. This is a Close Date variety, the first of seven uses of the obverse die, with the 8 in the date much too high and leaning to the right. The reverse die was in its fourth and final use when this coin was struck. This MS61 example shows none of the die cracks expected for the die pair, which suggests the dies were lapped, since there are no known examples from a perfect state of the dies. The reverse die, in particular, was near its demise. Close examination of the reverse shows multiple areas of weakness -- particularly among the field stars and the last two clouds, as well as the F in OF. Die erosion is evident at the peripheries. Light golden overtones cover the softly lustrous, silver-gray surfaces of this nice dollar. Full details are seen on Liberty's hair strands and curls, although stars 1 through 7 are flat. The eagle's feather detail on the wings remain sharp despite the die lapping. An attractive, well-centered early dollar.
