Lot Description
1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9 XF45 NGC. B-26, BB-114, R.5. Bowers-Borckardt Die State V. An extensive network of die cracks on both sides indicates this coin was struck from a late (nearly terminal) state of the dies. The BB-114 variety is identified by the die crack that starts under the 9 in the date and extends through the two inner points of star 1, together with the reverse star touching the upper point of the eagle's beak. The surviving population of BB-114 numbers no more than 35-60 examples in all grades and this Choice XF specimen is probably in the lower reaches of the Condition Census for the variety. Pleasing shades of gold and bluish-gray toning blanket the surfaces of both sides, with traces of mint luster underneath. The central reverse was softly struck and some light adjustment marks are visible above the eagle's head. A rare prize for the student of die varieties and die states.
