Lot Description
1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, 5 Stripes, 10 Arrows AU53 PCGS. B-17, BB-101, High R.4. Ex: Cardinal Collection. The Five Stripes reverse was used to coin BB-96 (Knobbed 9) and BB-101 (Pointed 9) silver dollars. The BB-101 is much scarcer of the two, and has a lower census. There are only six AU examples recorded in the second edition of Dave Bowers' Encyclopedia of United States Silver Dollars 1794-1804, and only one of those grades finer than this example. This late die state appears to match Die State V in that reference, the most advanced die state recorded. Die swelling appears in the left obverse and reverse fields with die cracks outside the stars along the left obverse border. Both sides have delicate champagne toning over the silver-gray surfaces with delicate golden peripheries, showing faint splashes of pale blue. The surfaces show minor marks, most notably at the right obverse. Ex: ANA Signature Sale (Heritage, 8/1995), lot 6511; Cardinal Collection (American Numismatic Rarities, 6/2005), lot 28; Bowers and Merena (10/2005), lot 7008. From The Joan Carroll Collection.
