Lot Description
1798 $1 Knobbed 9. B-3, BB-94, R.4. AU55 NGC. Highest wave incomplete, R slightly high; Ray of star 12 points to I in PLURIBUS. Reiver die state a. Bowers-Borckardt die state III. A very attractive coin for the grade with medium to dark gray toning throughout. The surfaces show a few scattered ticks, including a complex scuff near the obverse center dot, and two tiny ticks on Liberty's breast. On the reverse we note a minor tick on the post of the I of UNITED, and a rim tick above the final A of AMERICA. There are no adjustment marks or other problems worthy of note, and this is a very eye appealing example for the specialist. In terms of rarity, this is undoubtedly one of the finer examples to survive nudged out by the technically finer Cardinal coin which is identifiable by several small planchet flaws (this is reportedly Bolender's own specimen, but no plate match is available to confirm this). Certainly in the Condition Census for the variety, and a difficult die pairing to obtain in any grade above VF. Later die state with a minor die crack from the rim to the upper point of the second star and slightly beyond into the left field. No pedigree information included, but obtained by Jules Reiver prior to 1985. Envelope Included.
