Lot Description
1798 $1 Large Eagle XF40 PCGS. B-3, BB-94, R.4. This coin should see strong demand from die variety specialists as most consider it to be a Rarity-4 die marriage. It is also an example of the short-lived "Knob 9" dated obverse die, which is listed in The Redbook. This obverse die was used twice previously to strike 1798 B-4, BB-92 and 1798 B-5, BB-93. The reverse die will later be used to strike two additional varieties, 1798 B-7, BB-95 and 1798 B-20, BB-102. Most of the surviving examples of this variety are found in grades lower than the XF40 example offered here. This coin displays a few noticeable adjustment marks at the center and lower right portion of the reverse. The surfaces show an abundant amount of deep charcoal-gray toning on each side.
