Lot Description
1798 $1 10 Arrows. B-21, BB-107, R.4. MS61 NGC. Die chip over left side of 9; Arc star pattern. Only 10 arrows. Reiver die state a, Bowers-Borckardt die state II. Dusky gray toning with hints of gold and blue over the entire surface of the coin. There are extensive adjustment marks on the obverse which are present on the devices and lighter in the fields. These adjustment marks are commonly found on this variety, and they are somewhat concealed by Liberty's curls, but apparent with a loupe. A decent strike with slight weakness on a couple of the obverse stars and eagle's breast feathers and left wing. The surfaces are generally clean and attractive, although we do note a couple of minor nicks between stars six and seven on the obverse near the dentils. On this middle die state, we note some die rust on the obverse. Certainly well up in the Condition Census for the variety, and a fairly scarce issue to obtain. The pedigree chain notes that this is the Bolender coin, but it was not plated in his variety book as other obverse and reverse die pairs were used to represent this variety. Ex: Superior's Neggen Sale (February, 1976) lot 658 at $1,750; Superior's Gilhousen Sale (October, 1973) lot 1238 at $1,800; Charles Ruby; M. H. Bolender (February, 1952); Thomas Elder Sale (1923). Envelope Included.
