Lot Description
1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, Wide Date AU58 NGC. B-23, BB-105, R.3. Bowers-Borckardt Die State III. A scarce late die state. The 1798 Draped Bust dollar claims a mintage of 327,536 pieces, and both Small Eagle and Heraldic Eagle reverse motifs were employed during the year. Only two die varieties are known for the Small Eagle type, but the Heraldic Eagle design boasts a total of 31 different varieties. This coin represents the slightly scarce BB-105 variety, with a flaw on star 4 and the leaf point under the left foot of I in AMERICA. The obverse die was also used to strike the BB-104 variety and the reverse was used on the early state of BB-106. This coin features well-struck design elements, with a touch of softness on the centers and some incomplete hair detail, due to lapping of the dies. The pleasing surfaces are blanketed in shades of bluish-gray and champagne-gold toning, with much original mint luster underneath. Only minor signs of contact are apparent. Census: 61 in 58, 40 finer (1/13).
