Lot Description
1798 $1 Wide Date. B-22, BB-104, R.3. AU50 NGC. Wide date, 79 close, 8 touches bust; Arc star pattern. Star 3 out of position and distant from cloud. Reiver die state b. Bowers-Borckardt die state IV. This is the Reiver plate coin for the variety, both obverse and reverse. Bright silver and without any signs of toning. A well struck coin that has strong eye appeal despite lacking any toning. Identifiable by a minor chatter mark in the right obverse field between the base of Liberty's chin and star eleven. The obverse has a minor edge nick above BE. On this later die state, the reverse has several die cracks, including a significant crack down the right side of the E of STATES to the cloud below. Additional cracks are seen just right of this crack, like rain coming down from the rim toward the star field and eagle. A faint crack is also seen through NITED ST. One of the later examples seen of this variety. Ex: Classic Gallery (April, 1991), lot 373. Envelope Included.
