Lot Description
1798 $1 Large Eagle, Wide Date VF35 NGC. B-19, BB-106, R.5. Die State III. Reiver Die State b. Pointed 9, Arc Star Pattern. L centered between star 7 and I; die chips between T and E of STATES. The obverse of this example is lightly cracked through the hair, vertically down from the E of LIBERTY. Apparently this variety is unknown without this crack. This die crack continues down through the bust to the digit 1. It fades out and reappears as it crosses the bust, becoming heavy near the border. The top hair details right of the crack are sharper than those to the left. This is the die state that is most often seen for this variety. Light silver surfaces with hints of champagne and sky-blue toning. Surfaces are typical for the grade with numerous minuscule imperfections, but none of any consequence. Ex: Stack's (6/2002), lot 574. From The William Luebke Collection.
