Lot Description
1798 $1 Wide Date. B-24, BB-124, R.2. AU50 NGC. Three die file lines right of the date; Line star pattern, star 12 touches upper beak, points to right edge of B. Reiver die state b. Bowers-Borckardt die state V. A very late die state for this variety, with several minor die cracks seen on the obverse near the date and last few stars. Toned a light gray color, with some darker flecks in the peripheral lettering and devices, and a touch of gold on the reverse. There are some central adjustment marks above the eagle which may account for the weakness of several reverse stars and a couple of the clouds near OF, although the die may have been lapped in this area. On balance this is a pleasing coin for the grade despite some hairlines which dulled the luster. This is a very late die state which adds greatly to the appeal for variety specialists. Ex: John Haugh, (August, 1997). Envelope Included.
