Lot Description
1799/8 $1 13 Stars Reverse MS62+ PCGS Secure. CAC. B-1, BB-142, R.4. Ex: Colonel Green/Hesselgesser. Bowers-Borckardt Die State III, the shattered die state of an interesting variety, with this coin specifically mentioned in the text of the recently published Bowers Encyclopedia of United States Silver Dollars 1794-1804 as the foremost representative of the Late Die State. Multiple, heavy die cracks encircle much of the border, with a major flaw between the R and I of AMERICA, the die approaching its demise. An impressive provenance accompanies this coin, which is ranked third on the list of Notable Specimens in the above-mentioned Bowers Encyclopedia . The coin passed from the Waldo C. Newcomer Collection to Col. E.H.R. Green, to James G. Macallister and the T. James Clarke Collection, and later to Dr. Robert Hesselgesser (Ira and Larry Goldberg, September, 2011) and to our consignor. This is a memorably toned and thoroughly attractive example of this scarce, overdated variety. Rose highlights mingle with antique-gray patina, surrounded by vivid aqua-blue margins. The strike is bold on the peripheries, but a touch soft at the centers, as is typical for the variety. Vibrant luster resides beneath the rich, appealing toning. The fields and devices show careful preservation, with no significant abrasions or marks of any kind across the smooth, hard surfaces. Liberty's portrait is unblemished to the eye, with a single short nick on the jawline visible with a glass to serve as a pedigree marker (as if there would ever be a need, because this coin is so beautifully and distinctively toned). One could hardly hope to find an early dollar with a more original, powerfully appealing appearance or a more numismatically significant provenance. Population: 1 in 62 (1 in 62+), 1 finer (3/14). From The Northern Lights Collection.
