Lot Description
1800 $1 XF45 PCGS. B-5, BB-189, R.5. Ex: Miller/Hesselgesser. Bowers-Borckardt Die State II. A nearly perfect example for the grade, this appealing dollar has the original, old-silver look early type and series collectors cherish. Hints of golden mint luster brighten the light-gray devices, which are surrounded by silver-gray fields and deep charcoal-gray margins. A bold strike retains sharp detail on Liberty's hair strands, drapery folds, and the well-formed stars. The eagle's breast feathers, wing tips, and shield are virtually complete despite 15 points of wear. The BB-189 is an R.5 variety -- one of the scarcer varieties of the year. Five or six About Uncirculated examples of the variety exist, but so far none in mint state. This high-end XF45 is close to the Condition Census for the die pair. Ex: Pre-Long Beach Auction (Ira & Larry Goldberg, 2/2009), lot 1093, which realized $5,750.
