Lot Description
1800 $1 AU58 NGC. B-16, BB-187, R.2 Bowers-Borckardt Die State II. The obverse has a hairline crack from the second 0, curving across the drapery and right obverse field to star 10. The reverse die was used for B-20, B-4, and B-16, in that order, and that die is easily recognized via the raised roughness over ES of STATES, and along the border right of those letters. Despite the existence of nearly a thousand examples of B-16, high grade specimens are rare, and only about a half dozen Mint State pieces are known. This near-Mint specimen has satin luster with a hint of toning on brilliant silver surfaces. Scattered marks fail to diminish the eye appeal. The reverse hosts a few light adjustment marks over the right (facing) wing. Census: 50 in 58, 25 finer (11/11), for multiple 1800 varieties.
