Lot Description
1800 $1 Normal Dies. B-3, BB-183, R.5. AU53 NGC. R doubled; Cloud space left of center below E, leaf joins I below right upright. Reiver die state a. Bowers-Borckardt die state I. This is the Reiver and Bolender plate coin for the reverse of this variety, and the Bowers-Borckardt plate coin for the obverse and reverse of this variety. Slightly reflective on the obverse and bright silver in color, with a faint planchet streak from the second star toward Liberty's hair which confirms the above plate matches. The reverse has the usual soft strike on the lower wing feathers of the eagle, and the surfaces are faintly porous with traces of green toning in the recessed areas. There is a faint die crack up from the right base of A through the T to the serif of the E in STATES, and this is the only die crack seen. We note some faint horizontal hairlines on Liberty's bust and neck, and these may be adjustment marks or some trivial surface incursion, and we note a trivial edge nick above the E on LIBERTY. The present example would rate in the Condition Census of the top six survivors of this elusive variety, and it has an illustrious pedigree despite the minor problems noted. Ex: Numismatic Gallery's "World's Greatest Collection" of F. C. C. Boyd (1945); M.H. Bolender Sale of his personal collection (February, 1952); Stack's W. Earl Spies Collection (December, 1974), lot 175. Envelope Included.
