Lot Description
1800 $1 Dotted Date AU58 NGC. B-14, BB-194, R.3 A series of rust pits around the first 0 in the date give this variety its name, and provide for instant attribution. Lighter die lumps are scattered across much of the obverse die. Myriad die cracks are evident on each side of this late die state specimen. Most 1800 Dotted Date dollars are found in lower grades. For example, NGC has certified 31 examples with an average grade of less than XF40. When the Bowers-Borckardt record of Notable Specimens was compiled in the early 1990s, a single piece was arbitrarily graded MS63, although that coin from the Boyd Collection has not been seen since its 1945 auction appearance. Three others were graded AU50, and the balance were listed in lower grades. Reflective fields appear on both sides of this satiny, lustrous specimen, with reddish-gold toning over light silver surfaces. Both sides have a few scattered marks. Census: 2 in 58, 3 finer (4/12).
