Lot Description
1801 $1 AU58 PCGS. B-4, BB-214, R.4. Bowers-Borckardt Die State III. The first 1 in the date nearly touches the curl. The distance from the bust to star 13 is about the same as that from star 8 to the Y. The lowest arrowhead is under the left-bottom serif of the N in UNITED. This lovely near-Mint State coin is in the rare terminal die state, described in Bowers' recent early silver dollars reference as "at least five to 10 times scarcer than the preceding." Two tiny reverse die cracks characterize the state: One is a tiny die crack from outside the left shield border, about where the leftmost vertical shield lines meet it. The second is an also-small diagonal field crack that starts three dentils right of the end of STATES. This piece offers gorgeous silver and lilac-blue patina over lustrous, highly reflective surfaces. Certified in a green-label holder. From The Klamath Mountain Collection, Part II.
