Lot Description
1801 $1 AU55 NGC. CAC. B-3, BB-213, R.3. The right foot of each T on the reverse is missing, and that feature is diagnostic for the variety. The distance from the left serif of the first 1 is about the same as the distance from the upper point of star 8 to the top serif of the Y. Die State III with a short crack from the rim below the hair curl toward the first 1. Both editions of the Bowers Silver Dollar Encyclopedia lists Die State II three times, describing a progression of reverse clash marks, although the third listing is redundant. The second edition of the Bowers reference lists four Mint State pieces, two AU58 specimens, and six AU55 examples as Notable Specimens. This piece appears to be a different example from those listed. An accurate condition census for the early silver dollars is still needed. This Choice AU piece has pleasing light golden-gray surfaces with hints of peripheral blue toning. Considerable luster remains with few surface marks.
