Lot Description
1801 $1 AU58 NGC. B-2, BB-212, R.3. Bowers-Borckardt Die State II, with the "double collar" clash marks at Liberty's throat and clash marks from the clouds above the date. As a date, the 1801 Draped Bust dollar is the least available of the Heraldic Eagle issues. There are four die varieties known for the date, with this coin representing the BB-212 variety recognized by the clash marks at the date and the perfect T's in the reverse legend. Q. David Bowers notes, "Examples are quite rare in AU or finer." The present coin is a lightly circulated specimen that preserves almost all of its original detail, with just a trace of high-point wear on the design elements. The surfaces are patinated in iridescent shades of golden-brown, blue-steel, and silver-gray, with strong hints of original mint luster under the toning. A few minor adjustment marks are apparent on the reverse. Census: 22 in 58, 9 finer (7/11).
