Lot Description
1802/1 $1 Wide Date AU58 NGC. B-3, BB-234, R.3. Bowers-Borckardt Die State III. Only 41,650 Draped Bust dollars were struck in 1802, with seven die varieties known for the date. A small die lump between stars 8 and 9 and Liberty's forehead identifies this coin as a representative of the BB-234 variety. The present coin is a well-preserved specimen, with only the slightest trace of actual wear evident on the devices. The die was lapped prior to striking this late die state, and some detail was lost in the process, including some of the arrow shafts and much of cloud 6. Both sides exhibit pleasing pinkish-gray patina, with no mentionable distractions. Census: 18 in 58, 8 finer (10/13).
