Lot Description
1850-O Liberty Seated Silver Dollar. AU-55 (NGC). Prized by date collectors for years, the 1850-O Seated dollar is rare and desirable in any grade. The mintage of 40,000 pieces saw considerable attrition over the years, and there are certainly fewer than 500 known today, with a maximum of 277 grading events reported between NGC and PCGS combined. In high grades collector demand is the strongest when such coins cross the auction block. Toned with a mix of blue and gunmetal-russet over both sides, well matched and attractive in nature. The strike is sharp on Liberty's head and stars. Surface quality is average with light shallow marks in the fields and an old planchet streak coursing through the left obverse stars and field. All seen have minor die rust which appears as raised lumps in the fields, one near star twelve on the obverse, others behind the eagle's head and below his wings, evidence of the high humidity in the New Orleans area which causes unprotected die surfaces to quickly rust.
