Lot Description
1859 Seated Liberty Silver Dollar. Proof-64 (PCGS). Secure Holder. Veiled in mostly silver-gray tinting, both sides of this coin do reveal speckles of much bolder cobalt-blue and reddish-orange patina around the peripheries. More direct angles reveal enough field-to-device contrast to suggest a Cameo designation, although few blemishes come into view even after such closer scrutiny. Fully struck.
An original mintage of 800 pieces belies the true rarity of this early proof issue in the Seated Dollar series. Many of those coins were undoubtedly melted in the Mint at the end of the year, there being few dedicated numismatists or other interested parties in the United States of the late 1850s.
