The fully original example has all of the distinctive appearance that collectors could ask for, including sharp relief, full mirrored fields, (no lifelessness as on lesser coins), and charismatic shades of original color over both sides. With the Civil War then in its third year, leisure activity like coin collecting fell to a low point in 1863-64. As the mintage reveals, only a small number of Proof sets were bought by collectors in 1863. The intervening 148 years has often been harsh on those seated Liberty dollars that survive. But this specimen, which retains fully reflective surfaces, stands at the forefront.
