Lot Description
1876-S T$1 MS66 NGC. Type One Obverse and Reverse, Large S mintmark. A shimmering, silky-smooth representative with bold definition save for a few isolated areas on the obverse that are affected by roller marks. This phenomena was to show up again on S-mint Morgans from the mid 1890s through the first few years of the 20th century. The obverse displays just a hint of toning at the rims while golden and mint-green shades concentrically cover the reverse. Despite large scale exportation to the Pacific Rim, the 1876-S was produced in significant enough numbers (over 5.2 million pieces) to ensure its status as one of the most plentiful Trade Dollar issues at the Mint State level. That said, the number of survivors in Gem condition falls off dramatically and taken a step further, MS66, it is extremely scarce. Census: 3 in 66, 0 finer (11/05).
